How Do I Store My Shoes?

From boxes to bins or even a pile by the door, shoes can be sorted for your success (and maybe the home team's too).
Years ago I learned that regardless of my strong will wanting shoes to not live in a hot mess by the door, there simply wasn't a way to get everybody on board for that want. We did however create some compromises to keep the clutter at bay and mom's crazy a little calmer.
We're one of those homes that kicks our shoes off when we walk in the door so avoiding a pile became a 'how to' concern for me when we first starting sorting. Now, I don't have a problem with kicking my shoes off by the door and then carrying them downstairs to my room on my next trip. Since I get fully dressed in my room, shoes work best for me there. Kiddo on the other hand, prefers to keep everything by the door. A compromise needed to be put in place to support his wants of organizing by the door and my preference of not having a visible pile by the door. We started with a bin, without a lid, on the floor for him to literally kick them off in to. That go leveled up when the bin moved behind the front closet door. And finally, we moved into a hanging shoe rack that he can just place the shoes into. The macro system remained the priority and the process up-leveled slowly into a compromise.
Personally, I like most shoes in a box with a lid and tucked away inside my closet. I can put them back in any order and don't have to see them all all the time and it avoids a pile for me to dig through. Bonus, for me being a fan of shoes, having a set amount of boxes and space helps me control my random shopping impulses.
Are you more of a non-visual, micro organizer like me or macro like my son?
