What's the Best Container to Keep Me Organized?

YES!!! Is almost always the answer to any questions pertaining containers but of course, there are catches to that yes. Containers can be a gift when it comes to getting and staying organized because it's an item specifically designed to contain stuff. The flip side to that is there are so many different kinds, styles, and types of containers that getting the wrong ones can become frustrating clutter quickly.
Picking the best container for you will mostly depend on your personal organizing style BUT there are still some general basics I encourage clients about when it comes to containers. The first being measure first!!! The frustration can be so strong if you're out, grab a container for specific spot or purpose and then it doesn't fit. Or doesn't fit how you wanted it to in your head. Maybe it leaves a big gap between shelves. Or is just a smidge too wide and doesn't even fit in the spot. Perhaps it's simply a couple inches too deep and hangs off the front too far. My biggest annoyance with the buy without measuring is the container doesn't hold everything I need it to for that specific area. I needed it to hold 10 sweaters and only manages 8, ugh!!! Measure, Measure, Measure is a must before going to spend money on organizing containers.
Next is check out the entire shape of the bin, tote and/or basket. Is the top opening bigger than the bottom? Is it a full drawer option or does it have a scoop like front that could lessen the actual storage space you're needing. Does the stacked system have a lip that hangs over that can catch things inside?
The last main 'tip' I give clients when talking containers is test it out! If you're not sure it's right for your style or can hold things you're thinking about, test it out while shopping. Grab stuff from around the store, toss it inside and see what you think. Maybe you have to put it on the floor to make sure it's tall enough for easy access or stick it on an eye-level shelf to make sure it matches your organizing style needs. When all else fails, keep your receipt. Let's say you've done some minor testing at the store so you buy the bin to see if it will really work at home. If it isn't a 'heck yes!' once you get it home, don't be afraid to return it and try again with something else.
Getting containers is an investment into an organized lifestyle and can be such fun tools to use throughout all the small spaces!
