What Your Office Shelves Are Trying to Tell You

A gentle reset for shelves and storage using the 3S Method.

Office shelves with white boxes, colorful folders, and books. Desk with pens and a clipboard. Bright, organized workspace.
An organized office space featuring neatly arranged white boxes, colorful folders, and books on shelves, alongside a desk equipped with pens and a clipboard.

Open shelves are tricky. They can be beautiful — or they can become the place where everything you don’t know what to do with ends up. In my office, my shelves started out intentional. Books neatly stacked. A few meaningful decor pieces. Functional storage bins.

Over time, though, they became clutter catch-alls. Instead of tearing everything down, I used the 3S Method.

Simplify (Pick one small section)

I didn’t empty every shelf. I chose one single cubby.

In 15 minutes, I removed anything I didn’t truly love, use, or need.

No pressure. Just gentle decisions.

Sort (Group with purpose)

For what remained, I grouped items by function:

  • Books together

  • Office supplies in one bin

  • Sentimental items in another

Suddenly, my shelves looked calmer — without being “styled.”

Sustain (Keep it simple)

Now, whenever I add something new to my office, I ask: “Where does this belong?”

If it doesn’t have a home, I reconsider whether I need it at all.

Your shelves don’t need to be perfect. They just need to reflect your work and your life.

The 3S Method makes that possible — one small space at a time.
