Why Clearing the Bedside Changed Bedtime in Our House

Child's room with turquoise walls, tree and animal decals. White bed, green and pink bedding, owl pillows. Pink nightstand, white lamp.
A whimsical child's room features turquoise walls adorned with tree and animal decals, cozy owl-themed bedding, and a pink nightstand with a white lamp, creating a playful and inviting atmosphere.

Bedtime used to feel busy in our house. Even when the lights were off, the room felt full — of books, toys, stuffies, and everything else that had drifted toward the bed.

Once we cleared the sleep zone, something shifted. We didn’t remove everything — just what didn’t belong. A few favorite stuffed animals stayed. The rest found homes.

Now the bed feels like a place to rest, not play. And each night, we spend a few minutes returning it to that calm. Five minutes. That’s all it takes.
