You Don’t Have to Tackle All the Paper Today

A kinder way to manage paper using the 3S Method.

A pen rests on a laptop beneath a stack of papers and clipboards, capturing the essence of a focused office environment with soft, blurred lighting in the background.

Paper clutter has a way of whispering guilt. Every unopened envelope, unsorted receipt, or loose document feels like a tiny reminder of something you “should” have handled already.

For years, I avoided my paper pile because it felt too big. Too messy. Too behind. Then I stopped trying to fix it all at once and started using the 3S Method.

Simplify (Pick just one pile)

Instead of dumping every file onto the table, I chose one small stack. Just one.

I set a 15-minute timer and worked through it slowly:

  • Trash what was clearly junk

  • Shred anything with personal information

  • Set aside only what truly needed action

Not everything got done — and that was okay.

Sort (Create a simple system)

For the papers I kept, I used three basic categories:

  • To File

  • To Act

  • To Keep

No complicated filing system. No rainbow labels. Just clarity.

Sustain (Build a gentle habit)

Now, instead of letting paper pile up, I do a mini sort once a week. Ten minutes max.

Most weeks, that’s enough to keep things from spiraling. Paper doesn’t have to control your office. With the 3S Method, you can move from overwhelm to order — gradually and realistically.
