Embracing Free Time for Ultimate Happiness

One of our Hopeful Journey lifestyle goals is discovering more free time. I love saving money, avoiding harsh chemicals, and reducing stress, but having that free time to spend with loved ones is my ultimate happiness.

In our Organizing 101 Class, we discuss finding your 15-a-day. This simple approach can be achieved in two ways: decluttering or organizing. Just starting out? Begin in a stressful area that isn't very sentimental, like the kitchen, bathrooms, or closets. In that space, you'll eliminate 15 items. Not just moving them elsewhere in the house, but truly saying goodbye to them. Whether it's trash, expired items, clothes you rarely wear, or items to donate, just find at least 15.

Let's take the kitchen, for example. Condiments and spices can quickly create clutter. Get rid of those half-used bottles in the fridge door. That spice you used for a recipe years ago? It can go too. Gadgets and appliances are other clutter hotspots in the kitchen and can provide a few items to donate. Do you have an appliance you thought would be great but often use something more convenient instead? Maybe a couple of food graters or multiple blenders/processors. How about the numerous stirrers or spoons in the drawer when you always reach for your favorite one? Another place to find donation options is among your pots and pans. If you've merged households or received hand-me-downs, don't keep both sets. With four burners, you likely don't need five pots of similar sizes. You can't use them all at once and probably don't want to wash that many dishes after cooking either. So, keep what you use! In our Hopeful Headquarters kitchen, we have a large skillet, a small skillet, a big pot, and two smaller pots—just enough to make all the Thanksgiving sides and keep one on the warming burner spot.

The second aspect of our 15-a-day process is minutes. Once we've cleared a space, it's time to set up your organizing system. Be sure to measure before purchasing any containers! Other factors to consider when organizing the space include arranging it for the simplest person's style. In a solo area, be as detailed as you like, but common spaces need simplicity for success.

Many of you know I'm a big fan of a self-cleansing organizing system. Honestly, it's how I keep my shoe shopping in check. Once spaces are cleared and organized effectively, this is where you'll find those precious 15 minutes of free time.
